Warrington is a town in the county of Cheshire, England. It is around 18 miles east of Liverpool and 16 miles west of Manchester and has a population of around 203,000.
Warrington was founded initially by the Romans but was expanded upon by the Saxons and in the Middle ages. It then became a market town that specialised in textile and tool production. A further expansion of Warrington then coincided with the Industrial Revolution thanks in many ways to the River Mersey being made navigable in the 18th century. Although heavy industry declined in the 70s and 80s, the growth of the New Town (Warrington was designated a New Town in 1968) saw an increase in employment in light industry, distribution and technology.
In many ways Warrington is best known for its Rugby League squad: The Warrington Wolves. The Wolves were crowned Challenge Cup champions for the third time in fours years in 2012 following a victory over The Leeds Rhinos.
